Pike County man arrested in recovery of stolen logging trailer

Pike County man arrested in recovery of stolen logging trailer

A joint investigation by the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) and the Pike County District Attorney’s Office has resulted in an arrest for theft of a 1995 logging trailer valued at $10,000. John David Mills, Jr., aged 36 of Goshen, was charged on May 7 with Theft in the First Degree. Mills was released from the Pike County Jail on $5,000 bond. Theft of Property, First Degree, is a Class B felony which, if convicted, carries a jail sentence of 2-20 years and/or a fine up to $30,000.

The Alabama Forestry Commission is committed to reducing the number of forestry-related crimes that occur each year across the state. These crimes generate losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to landowners, the timber industry, and Alabama’s economy. The AFC provides a Wildland Arson/Forest Crimes Hotline so that citizens can call and report theft of timber, vandalism or theft of harvesting equipment, or wildland arson. This toll-free number is (800) 222-2927.

The Alabama Department of Public Health urges awareness of hepatitis during May

One in every 10 Americans is affected by some form of liver disease. The liver, the largest organ in the body after the skin, is essential for survival. If the liver is not working properly, a person can become very sick and can even die.

The Alabama Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urge the public to learn the risk factors of viral hepatitis. The month of May has been designated as Hepatitis Awareness Month, and May 19 is the first national observance of Hepatitis Testing Day.

The word "hepatitis" means inflammation of the liver. Toxins, certain drugs, some diseases, heavy alcohol use, and bacterial and viral infections can all cause hepatitis. Hepatitis is also the name of a family of viral infections that affect the liver.

Missed opportunities haunt Warhawks in 2-0 loss to Embry-Riddle

Missed opportunities haunt Warhawks in 2-0 loss to Embry-Riddle

Cody Hall scattered just five hits in a complete-game effort, but the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team stranded 13 runners on base, including multiple runners in five innings, as it fell to Embry-Riddle, 2-0, at Sliwa Stadium in the Daytona Beach regional of the NAIA Opening Round Tournament on Friday.

The Warhawks (37-23) stranded at least one runner on base in every inning, with the exception of the seventh and eighth innings. However, in each frame AUM had a runner on base and it left the bases loaded in the sixth inning.

Hall was masterful on the mound for the Warhawks, allowing just the five hits, but the Eagles (42-16) pieced three together in a two-run first inning to cap the scoring. On the afternoon, Hall needed 118 pitches to complete the outing, striking out seven and walking two to fall to 8-3 on the season.

AUM had nine hits in the game, including four by Brian Wheeler.
