Today in Alabama History: November 5

November 5, 1867: The Alabama Constitutional Convention, consisting of delegates elected under U.S. Congress’s Radical Reconstruction plan, begins meeting in Montgomery. The 100 delegates, of which 96 were Republicans, including 18 African Americans, drafted a liberal document that was declared ratified the next year to become the Alabama Constitution of 1868.

Annual festival to kick off International Education Week at Troy University

TROY – The International Student Cultural Organization (ISCO) festival will highlight a week of activities aimed at promoting internationalization at Troy University.

 

The ISCO Festival, which features international cuisine and entertainment by TROY students, is set for 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.

 

The festival will kick off the University’s Observance of International Education Week, a nationwide event set for Nov. 14-18 that is designed to showcase the benefits of international exchange and cultural diversity. Troy University serves more than 800 international students.

 

“The festival is the most diverse and most exotic dinner theater offered in or around Troy,” said Pete Vroom, ISCO’s faculty advisor. “We take you all around the world without leaving your dinner table through a variety of international foods and performances.”

Troy University announces revised Homecoming schedule

Troy University announces revised Homecoming schedule

TROY – Due to the change in kickoff time of Troy University’s Nov. 12 Homecoming football game to accommodate television broadcast, the University’s Office of Alumni Affairs has released a revised schedule of activities for the day.

 

Kickoff for the game between the Trojans and the Mean Green of North Texas has been moved to noon. Pre-game festivities including the introduction of the Homecoming Court are now set for 11:30 a.m.

 

In addition, the Homecoming Parade, presented by the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, has been moved to 9 a.m. that morning. Trojan Walk, which begins at Trojan Arena and ends at Veterans Memorial Stadium, is set for 9:45 a.m.

Author Winston Groom to discuss new book at Troy University Montgomery

Renowned Alabama writer Winston Groom, author of “Forrest Gump,” will discuss and sign copies of his latest book during an appearance at Troy University on Thursday, Nov. 17.

The event will be held at the Montgomery Campus, inside the Gold Room in Whitley Hall from 7-9 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Groom’s latest work is “Kearny’s March: The Epic Creation of the American West 1846-1848.” The book is an historical account of Gen. Stephen Watt Kearney’s military campaign during the Mexican War. Books will be available for purchase from Capitol Books and News at the event.

A native of Mobile and a graduate of the University of Alabama, Groom gained literary fame with his New York Times-bestseller “Forrest Gump” and its blockbuster film adaptation starring Tom Hanks.

He is the author of fourteen books.

Troy University announces Homecoming Court

Troy University announces Homecoming Court

TROY -- Troy University has announced its 2011 Homecoming Court following a vote of the University’s student body.

 

The members of the court will ride in the annual Homecoming parade in downtown Troy beginning at 9 a.m. on Nov. 12 and later will be introduced during pre-game festivities at Veterans Memorial Stadium beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Trojans will play host to Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas beginning at noon. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime.
