Troy University has honored two students and a member of the University’s faculty with the 2013 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards.

Kash Forrester, who graduated in December with a bachelor’s degree in education, Wes Tindell, a senior biology/biomedical sciences major, and Theresa Johnson, TROY English instructor were presented the awards during a luncheon on the Troy Campus on Monday. The recipients were also honored during the University’s annual Honors Convocation on Monday night.

The Sullivan Award, which is presented at select colleges and universities throughout the United States, recognizes recipients for their excellence of character, humanitarian service and spiritual qualities. The award has been presented annually to a male student, a female student and one non-student at TROY since 1981. Students, faculty and staff nominate candidates for the award.

TROY, AL (WSFA)- Troy Police Department arrested 21 year old Troy man Roderick R. Givens Wednesday afternoon for Attempted Murder, according to information released by Chief Jimmy Ennis. 

At approximately 4:12pm, Troy Police Department officers were dispatched to a reported shooting at a local business in the 800 Block of North Three Notch Street. Officers arrived on the scene to find that a black male had been shot in the right leg with a pistol. The male subject was the only victim and the wound was  non-life threatening.  

Officers en route to the scene had been given a possible vehicle description and a patrolman spotted the vehicle fleeing the area. After a brief search, officers located the vehicle behind a residence on William Street. Officers made contact with a family member of Givens at the home and after a short period of time, Givens came out of the residence and surrendered to officers. 

Recent surveillance for rabies in the raccoon population near Columbiana in Shelby County has revealed three positive cases. The current area of focus includes a two-mile radius around the Beeswax Creek boat launch area, where the most recent of the positive raccoons was discovered.

The ongoing surveillance is being conducted by the USDA Wildlife Services (WS) along with the Alabama Department of Public Health. The surveillance began in response to a rabid puppy found in February that was confirmed to be infected with a raccoon variant of the rabies virus.

The primary concern is that these positive cases have been found in an area where raccoon rabies is not typically found. According to Dana Johnson, a USDA WS biologist, the primary focus will be expanding the surveillance areas to try to determine the extent that the rabies virus has spread.
