Young artists encouraged to enter State Fish Art Contest

Young artists encouraged to enter State Fish Art Contest

Each year the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) partners with Wildlife Forever to conduct the State Fish Art Contest in which students depict a state fish and write a one-page essay to compete for scholarships and other prizes. Entries must be postmarked by March 31, 2013, and mailed to Wildlife Forever, 2700 Freeway Blvd., No. 1000, Brooklyn Center, MN, 55430.

Artists can choose to depict either of Alabama’s state fish: the largemouth bass or the fighting tarpon. Participants can also choose to draw state-fish from other states. In addition to the artwork, all of the artists, except those in grades 1-3, are required to write a one-page essay with facts about the fish, its natural habitat, and the importance of that habitat.

All artwork is judged by Wildlife Forever, which also handles contest details and awards prizes, such as scholarships, art supplies and fishing gear.

Rare English Bibles on display in Troy today

Rare English Bibles on display in Troy today

Troy Public Library and the Troy Arts Council will host a rare collection of early English Bibles and psalters from the private collection of Michael Morgan, Atlanta, on December 7th, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Rare Bibles and artifact psalters – some over 470 years old – will be on display at Troy Public Library as part of a special one-day exhibit sponsored by the Troy Arts Council. Of particular interest will be an original first edition King James Bible.

During the year 2011, and continuing through the coming year, the English-speaking churches celebrated the 400th anniversary of the printing of the King James Bible in 1611. It was not a single effort, but the culmination of nearly a century of translation and revision of the Scriptures, beginning at the dawn of the Reformation, and continuing today.
