Cell phones now allowed for students in Pike Co. School system

Cell phones now allowed for students in Pike Co. School system

TROY, AL (WSFA) - Students in the Pike County School system are now allowed to carry cell phones following a policy change by the school board, but there are a lot of strings attached. The phones will have to be turned off and put away, according to the superintendent's office.

"We believe that this policy will be a positive thing," said Superintendent Dr. Mark Bazzell. "Today's world is full of cell phones. Kids ages 12 and up have them and almost all adults. So, it's difficult to manage situations where kids are in possession of cell phones."

Allowing students to have phones in their possession doesn't mean they'll be able to dial out on a whim. Consequences for not using the devices responsibly and during permitted times will be the same as when the phones weren't allowed.

Summer Spotlight shines on youth

Summer Spotlight shines on youth

Troy University focused its Summer Spotlight Creative Drama Camp on 84 children ages 4 – 13, culminating with a live performance Thursday night in the Trojan Center Theater.

An outreach of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the Department of Theatre and Dance’s Summer Spotlight program is designed to both spread arts education and help prepare theater education majors for jobs.

“Summer Spotlight is really an important component for serving the arts, children and youth, the community and our students,” said Adena Moree, Director of Theatre and Dance, which offers a major in P-12 theatre education in concert with the College of Education.

“These children have a wonderful time, and our students really have a chance to hone their instructional delivery to these age groups,” she said.

For 4- and 5-year olds, the Mini-Spotlighters program teaches creative movement, dance, storytelling and arts and crafts.
