Troy Symphony Band kicks off new season Oct. 9

TROY – The Troy University Symphony Band presents its first concert of the season Tuesday, Oct. 9 in Claudia Crosby Theater.

The free concert will feature several masterworks of wind band repertoire including Paul Hindemith’s monumental “Symphony in Bb,” Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry” and a seldom-heard work by John Philip Sousa entitled “By the Light of the Polar Star,” among others.

“Our students in the Symphony Band gain valuable performing experience in a formal concert setting and they have the opportunity to perform significant music for enthusiastic audiences,” said Dr. Mark Walker, Director of Bands at TROY.

Walker said the John M. Long School of Music and the College of Communication and Fine Arts provide the free concerts as both public service and outreach.

Free recital performance tonight at Troy Unviersity

Troy University’s John M. Long School of Music will play host to a guest and faculty recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Claudia Crosby Theater on the Troy Campus.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature guest pianist Dr. Rosangela Sebba of Mississippi State University and TROY Assistant Professor Dr. Michael H. Huff on trumpet.

Dr. Sebba currently serves as associate professor of piano and music theory. Prior to her appointment at Mississippi State, she held positions at Gustav Ritter State Conservatory - Brazil, the University of Southern Mississippi and Pear River Community College.

Dr. Sebba combines an active concert and teaching schedule, and is noted for her lecture-recitals and research in Brazilian music, specifically the music of M. Camargo Guarnieri. She is the founder and coordinator of the Brazilian Music Festival, an annual event at Mississippi State University.

Troy University John M. Long School of Music will present a free concert by guitarist Mitch Weverka tomorrow, September 26th in the Sorrell Chapel on the Troy Campus.

The concert, which will begin at 7 p.m., is open to the public.

Weverka, who was born in California but raised in Fort Worth, Texas, began playing the guitar at age 7, receiving most of his instruction from Bolivian guitarist/artist, Oscar Valdez. He holds performance degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Southern Methodist University. He also lived and studied in Italy, where he received a diploma from the Academia Chitaristica al Teatro Cingio in Parma, as well as a Diploma of Merit from Academia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.

Weverka is the founder and artistic/executive director of the Fort Worth Guitar Guild and currently coordinates the Guitar Guild Music Festival.

Troy University faculty members to fill roles in ‘Driving Miss Daisy’

TROY – Birmingham’s Virginia Samford Theatre is partnering with the Troy University Department of Theatre and Dance to present two performances of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Driving Miss Daisy” on the Troy Campus Sept. 24 and 25.

The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. nightly in the Trojan Center Theatre. Tickets are $10 for the public and $5 for Troy University students with valid student IDs and are available online at www.troytheatre.org or at the Theatre and Dance Box Office in the Trojan Center Theatre.

The 1987 play by Alfred Uhry follows the relationship between an elderly Southern Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her African-American chauffeur, Hoke Colburn.  The play was adapted for the screen in 1989, in the movie by the same name, featuring Jessica Tandy, Morgan Freeman and Dan Aykroyd. The movie adaptation was awarded the Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay.

Davis Theatre season opens with Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Bobby Horton

The 2012-2013 season at Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts will commence on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m., with a special performance by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra featuring composer and music historian Bobby Horton.

“Alabama: Here We Stay” is a collaborative performance project between the ASO and Horton that intertwines music and history by telling stories of the Civil War through the songs and music of the era.

celebrate two exhibits at the Johnson Center! ALABAMA in the MAKING, and Love, Faith Death and Magic are two incredible shows coming to a close at the Center, and we want you to see them.
After the Closing Reception at the Johnson Center enjoy the sounds of Ben Pritchett, Allan Wood and Wesley Dennis for our kickoff to the Thursday Night in the Studio Season. The doors will open at 6:00 and the music will start at 6:30. Tickets are only $12.50 and we encourage you to bring your own food and refreshments for a great night in downtown Troy!
