Local attractions make "What’s New in Alabama" list

Montgomery, Ala. — A Freedom Rides Museum, Black Belt Culinary Trail and a hurricane- proof Gulf Coast Zoo are among the list of what’s new in tourism across Alabama.

The state tourism department has compiled the following list of new tourism-related events, attractions, restaurants, hotels, shopping and entertainment. More than 40 venues that have opened, been updated or are under development as of January 2011 are included in the list.

Winn Dixie completes voluntary recall on in-store bakery items

On Friday, August 5, 2011, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., issued a voluntary recall on potentially mislabeled items from its in-store bakeries. Following this announcement, Department of Agriculture & Industry food safety inspectors began conducting recall effectiveness checks in Winn-Dixie stores throughout Alabama.

The items listed below are being recalled because the products may be mislabeled:

  • “Winn-Dixie Lemon Bar” cakes
  • “Winn-Dixie Chocolate Cherry Bar” cakes
  • “Winn-Dixie Bakery Iced Cinnamon Rolls - 6 Pack”

The mislabeled products may contain undeclared egg and/or wheat. Individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction. Individuals sensitive to wheat protein can suffer a moderate-acute allergic reaction.

Golden Boy Foods now accepting job applications

Golden Boy Foods now accepting job applications

TROY, AL (WSFA) - Golden Boy Foods, the owner of the peanut butter manufacturing plant coming to Troy, is now taking applications for workers.

The company says it will initially hire 65 people, then increase that number to around 130 in two years.

Hiring is being done through Alabama Industrial Development Training.

Golden Boy Foods bringing 130 new jobs to Troy

TROY, AL (WSFA) -  Golden Boy Foods Ltd, is bringing 130 new jobs to Troy.  The company, a leading supplier of organic and conventional peanut and nut butters, announced today that it will open its newest peanut butter plant in Troy.

The city of Troy was the right fit for the company according to Richard Harris, President and CEO of Golden Boy Foods.  He said, “In comparison with other locations we reviewed across Alabama and Georgia, Troy stood out as the most favorable climate for business, and the place in which we received the warmest welcome."

Governor Robert Bentley is pleased with Alabama’s latest economic development success story.  “The announcement that Golden Boy has chosen Troy shows great confidence in Alabama’s workforce.

New Industry Announcement Scheduled

Thursday, June 30: The City of Troy, the Pike County Economic Development Corporation and the Troy Industrial Development Board, along with Gov. Robert Bentley, will announce new industry location at 10 a.m. at 101 Hudson Street in the Troy Industrial Park. The Troy Industrial Park is located about two miles south of Highway 231 on the Henderson Highway (below Wiley Sanders and KW Plastics).

Troy U. athletes among 55 arrested at party; fraternity suspended

TROY, AL (WSFA) - The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity chapter at Troy University has been temporarily suspended following a party that resulted in dozens of arrests late Tuesday night.

The fraternity was hosting a university-sanctioned party at a local restaurant when the Alabama Beverage Control Board arrived. 

Agents with the ABC said they arrested 60 individuals and had 75 active cases pending following the party at The Pines Restaurant.
