Black Belt Adventures Announces Big Buck Photo Contest Winners

Montgomery, Ala. — The winners for the Alabama Black Belt Adventures Big Buck Photo Contest have been announced.

The organization, a public-private partnership that promotes outdoor recreation and tourism in Alabama’s Black Belt, sponsored a “big buck” photo contest for deer harvested in the 23-county region.

Winners have been chosen in three categories -- youth typical (up to 12 years old), youth typical (ages 13-18) and adult typical. Photos were posted on Facebook, and three finalists were determined for each category based on the highest number of “likes” received. Sports journalists then picked the winners.

The winners were:

Youth typical (up to 12 years old): Clark Bain of Carrollton. Other finalists in this category were Lyman Thomas Ramsey and Ethan Duncan.

Youth typical (ages 13-18): Danner Butler of Mobile. Other finalists in this category were Tanner Cox and Noah Hadley.

AUM athletics give back to community for MLK Day

AUM athletics give back to community for MLK Day

In conjunction with the university-wide Martin Luther King Day of Service initiative, several of the Auburn Montgomery athletic programs took part in a variety of community service projects across the area over the past week.

Representatives from baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, cheerleading, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s cross country all participated or have plans to participate in the initiative.

“It’s outstanding to see such widespread community engagement from our athletic programs,” Athletics Director Steve Crotz said. “Giving back to Montgomery is very important to AUM athletics, and there is no better time to emphasize this point than around a holiday celebrating a man who did so much, both for Montgomery and our nation as a whole.”

The AUM baseball team traveled up to Millbrook to assist the Alabama Wildlife Federation at a local pond.

Bethel AME Church to celebrate Founder's Day on February 10th

On February 10th, the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church will be celebrating Founder's Day.  During this grand event, we will be celebrating our denominational pride and unity.  Most of all, we will be celebrating the phenomenal significance based upon our birth in the midst of a true religious freedom and founded by a man of God who choose to simply "go along to get along".  And that blessed man was Richard Allen.

Our Founder's Day Celebration will be held at 3:00 p.m. and our guest speaker will be our newly appointed Presiding Elder of the Ozark Troy District, Reverend Andrew T. Holtz, Jr.

Bethel AME Church is located at Pike County Road 2222 in Goshen.

TROY Air Force ROTC honors fallen heroes

TROY – Troy University’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 017 will take part in a nationwide effort Friday and Saturday to recognize American heroes who have died in service to the country.

Cadets will read the names of some 1,700 soldiers dating from the Revolutionary War through the present day who have been killed in action. On Friday, the reading will begin at 8 a.m. on the Bibb Graves Quad in front of the Adams Administration Building. Saturday’s reading will begin at 10 a.m. between the Math and Science Complex and University Avenue.

“For me it is an honor to read the names of these fallen heroes, these individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” said Tyler Staub, TROY’s AFROTC recruiting officer, “to not only honor them, but also remind people, including myself, that freedom is not free.”
