Troy University students to join fight against hunger

Troy University students to join fight against hunger

Beginning this month, students at Troy University will take aim at the issues of poverty and hunger through a six-month campaign sponsored by the University’s Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement.

The student-led program, “Hungry for a Change,” seeks to raise awareness and help address the issue of hunger in the Troy community through several activities and special events.

“The Hungry for a Change campaign will include events geared towards educating students of the effects and problems of poverty and getting them actively involved in combating it locally in a personal way,” said Jonathan Cellon, coordinator of learning initiatives in TROY’s Office of First-Year Studies.

The campaign will begin with a Tent City Kickoff on Monday, Nov. 12 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Nov. 13 on the University’s Bibb Graves Quad.

Sound of the South honors military with “Salute to Armed Forces Day”

TROY – For more than a decade, Troy University’s Sound of the South Marching Band has been honoring the nation’s veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard personnel each football season with a special “Salute to Armed Forces Day” halftime show.

This year’s celebration on Nov. 10, when the Trojans host the midshipmen of the U.S. Naval Academy, highlights each service branch and focuses the spotlight on the U.S. Marine Corps, which will celebrate its 237th birthday.

“First, it’s the right thing to do,” said Dr. Mark Walker, Director of Bands at TROY. “The men and women of the military are giving us the ability to enjoy our freedom at home and we should recognize their service and loyalty to our country.”

That service reaches into the band itself, which currently counts about a half-dozen members of the armed services among the band’s roster. More members than that have close family connections to the military.

TROY – Troy University will host the midshipmen of the U.S. Naval Academy in its annual Salute to Veterans football game on Nov. 10, the birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps and the second meeting between the Midshipmen and the Trojans.

In honor of their service, the University is developing  special ticket packages for active duty personnel, members of the Reserve components, members of the National Guard and all service veterans. Details of the special offer will be released as soon as planning is completed.

Central to the game’s festivities will be pre-game and half-time shows by the Sound of the South saluting the nation’s veterans and current members of the military from all branches. A special emphasis will be placed on the Marines’ birthday, and other special events are being planned for the day.

The complex, located on Walnut Street where the old Troy High School once stood, was the site of an opening celebration by longtime Mayor Jimmy Lunsford and other guests.

The building boasts more than 24,000 square feet of space and includes a multi-purpose meeting room that includes audio-visual technology.

Library Director William White was especially excited about the new facility.

The new library also features sound-proof study rooms for tutoring, a computer lab, areas designed specifically for teenagers, and it even offers e-books for downloading on handheld devices.
