Area man needs your help to "Get on the Shelf at Walmart"
Keith Tuck talks about and demonstrates his invention, the Tuck and Go Shoe Lace Cover.

Keith Tuck has invented a product called the Tuck and Go Shoe Lace Cover and has entered it in a nationwide contest sponsored by Walmart.  The purpose of the contest is to seek out new invetions to be placed on their shelves.  Kevin needs your votes to win.  If he wins, his product will be available at Walmart stores and online at walmart.com.

All you have to do is go here to watch his video and vote!  You can vote once a day until April 3rd.

Winners will be determined by public voting.  The first round of voting will end on April 3rd and the top 10 entries will proceed to round 2.

Pond Owner Mentoring Kids Program comes to Troy

On Friday March 23, 2012, the Boys and Girls Club of Pike County will take part in a Pond Owner Mentoring Kids Program fishing event at Camp Butter and Egg, an outdoor adventure facility owned by Susan and Ron Pierce located in Troy, Ala. The Pond Owner Mentoring Kids Program is a partnership between various pond owners across the state and the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) that provides children and families access to fishing opportunities they may not otherwise have.
 
The event will begin with a casting and fishing clinic taught by WFF staff. Fishing rods and bait will be provided by the WFF. Local media is invited to attend. For additional information, contact WFF Biologist Aide and program coordinator Brenda Morrison at 205-477-6301. The pond is located at 2127 Butter and Egg Road, Troy, Ala. 36081.

Women of Distinction Annual Awards Luncheon is coming up

The Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama’s 17th annual Women of Distinction Luncheon is set for Thursday, March 15th at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center.

This year's honoree is Liz Sutton.  Liz serves as the president of Alabama World Travel and Sutton & Associates.  By setting an example of excellence through her service to family, career and community, Liz Sutton joins the ranks of nearly 100 accomplished and extraordinary women in Southern Alabama dedicated to helping girls reach their full potential.

The keynote speaker is Robin Meade, lead news anchor for HLN's Morning Express with Robin Meade.  She is also an author and singer/songwriter.

This event is open to the public, and GSSA is asking community leaders and members to join them.

Daniel Foundation supports Troy riverfront project in Phenix City

Daniel Foundation supports Troy riverfront project in Phenix City

Troy University’s proposed riverfront building in Phenix City has received a major boost in the form of a $600,000 gift from the Daniel Foundation.

The University, which established a campus in Phenix City in 1975, and the City have joined forces on the project, which will build a multi-story building which includes classrooms and offices in downtown Phenix City.

“Troy University, through the development of its campus, planted the seed of Renaissance in downtown Montgomery,” said Charles W. Daniel of the Daniel Foundation, which is based in Birmingham. “I believe the Troy University riverfront project in Phenix City will have a similar effect.

Nominations for Volunteer of the Year are open

Nominations are now open for the Volunteer & Information Center's 2012 River Region Volunteers of the Year awards.  Nominations must be received by March 1st.  The celebration will be held on April 17th at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.

Over the past 38 years, the Volunteer of the Year Awards Celebration has become the River Region’s largest annual event recognizing individuals and groups who have selflessly given their time and talent to improve their community and its residents’ overall quality of life. The awards celebration is hosted by the Volunteer & Information Center and the Junior League of Montgomery. Nominations are accepted at any time up till 6weeks prior to the celebration. The celebration is always during National Volunteer week in April.

ACES Urban PREP Program Offers Job Search Solutions to Individuals and Families

Over the past year, Alabamians have experienced high unemployment. A struggling economy and unstable state employment have left thousands of Alabamians out of work. While there were some visible changes in the employment statistics as recent as November 2011, unemployment rates in Alabama are still more than 9 percent according to the United States Department of Labor.

Extension's Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs Unit designed and published a Promoting Readiness for Employment Possibilities (PREP) strategic program initiative and tool kit to offer job search solutions to individuals and families seeking help.

LifeSouth is hosting a community blood drive in Troy

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, Inc. is facing a dire shortage of blood and is hosting a series of blood drives in the Montgomery Region from January 16th through January 22nd.

All blood types are needed, but there is a critical need for type 0 negative.  If you have this blood type, you are urged to donate as soon as possible. Please help LifeSouth build up its supply of all blood types by donating blood at the following blood drive:

Today at Walmart of Troy from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m.
