TROY – Vitaly Voloshin was about seven years old, and living in Moldova in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics at the height of the Cold War when someone at then-Troy State College left behind something of importance.

What that “someone” left behind would be lost in the classroom’s lectern for the next 50 years, only to resurface in October after a class, appropriately, in advanced discrete mathematics, taught by Dr. Voloshin.

“We started class just like every other Monday night,” said Rachel Anderson, a graduate student in secondary math education from Troy. “Every class, Dr. Voloshin walks in and moves the podium to an exact spot. This time something hit the ground.”

TROY -- Troy University faculty and staff members are helping to provide a brighter holiday season for military men and women, many of whom will spend this Christmas far from home.

Nearly 150 Christmas cards were signed during the University’s annual Sponsored Programs luncheon on Wednesday and will be sent to service members, veterans and their families as a part of the American Red Cross’ Holiday Mail for Heroes program, according to Judy Fulmer, TROY’s director of Sponsored Programs.

Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. was pleased the University could be involved with the program.

TROY, Ala. – Many Troy student-athletes are giving their time to help the less fortunate during the holiday, and now they are asking for your help.

The Trojans will be taking part in the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Christmas Party this year.  The party is being held on Friday, December 2, 2011 at Park Memorial Church on Elba Highway.  The event runs from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and relies heavily on volunteers to create a memorable evening for all of the children involved.

A signup sheet for volunteers from the Troy University campus is available in Room 332 of the Veterans Memorial Stadium Tower.  For those outside of the Troy campus wishing to volunteer, you are encouraged to directly contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pike County at (334) 566-2454.
