AWF seeking qualified individuals for Outdoor Classroom Consultant Program | Environment

Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) Outdoor Classroom Consultant Program

The AWF Outdoor Classroom Consultant Program will utilize qualified individuals in an Independent Contractor role to provide on-site technical advice and assistance to schools interested in developing and using outdoor classroom learning stations and schoolyard wildlife habitat sites for hands-on, cross-curricular activities for public and private K-12 schools.

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION:

AWF has divided the state into four regions and is seeking to identify one consultant per region who will provide on-site assistance to Alabama Outdoor Classroom Schools within each region.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Attend a three-day Outdoor Classroom Consultant Training on July 24-26, 2012, at AWF's Headquarters in Millbrook (10 miles north of Montgomery).

2. Provide on-going assistance to schools enrolled in the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program as identified by AWF representatives.

3. Provide on-site assistance for Outdoor Classroom Schools' planning committees with the following:

• Basic Information Requests about the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program
• Outdoor Classroom Site Evaluations & Habitat Assessments to help schools choose a site for their outdoor classroom, determine the types of learning stations they would like to include, and develop a master plan including a site map and estimated budget.
• Outdoor Classroom Work Day Assistance to help plan how to build their outdoor classroom sites with the assistance of the students, teachers, parents and community partners.
• Special Programs Presenter for enrolled Outdoor Classroom Schools' field days such as Earth Day celebrations.
• Maintenance Plan Development for long-term sustainability of the outdoor classroom site for years to come.

4. Provide Outdoor Classroom Schools' status reports within two (2) weeks of providing on-site assistance to Outdoor Classroom Schools.

5. Facilitate half-day, in-service, professional development workshops for enrolled Outdoor Classroom schools.

6. Assist with themed Outdoor Classroom Workshops that are held in the consultant's region of Alabama.

WORK VOLUME AND COMPENSATION:

Estimated range of 8 - 40 hours per month. Compensation will be based on stipends of $100 per half day (less than 6 hrs) and $200 per full day (6 hrs or more) - this includes all prep work and follow-up work pertaining to that day's school consultations, Plus Travel at $.55 per mile (based on federal mileage rate).

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in Education, Wildlife Science and/or Environmental Science

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Experience in coordinating an outdoor classroom site at a school enrolled in the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program. Experience teaching at an Outdoor Classroom School. Experience in using hands-on, outdoor, conservation education activities. Knowledge of wildlife, wildlife habitat, and environmental sciences. Experience in delivering professional development to teachers.
