Institute at Troy University to teach teachers about Vietnam | Events
Teachers from schools across Alabama will learn about the history and culture of Vietnam June 17-22 at an Alabama Humanities Foundation SUPER (School and University Partners for Educational Renewal) Teachers Institute at Troy University.
TROY, which operates three teaching sites in Vietnam, is joining forces with AHF to present “Vietnam, Vietnamese Americans, and Vietnam at War” designed to promote professional development of teachers in Alabama. The Institute on the Troy Campus will allow participants to investigate the social, political, cultural and historical features of modern Vietnam and its effects on the United States.
“This institute is designed to bring deeper awareness of the importance of Vietnam to high school teachers in Alabama,” said Dr. Harold Kaylor, lead scholar and director of this event, who is also a professor of English at Troy University. “The participants will be better prepared to inform students in their classes about the history, culture and thoughts of a very significant Asian country.”
In addition to TROY’s three sites in Vietnam, about 50 Vietnamese students study on the Troy Campus, Dr. Kaylor said, so understanding the culture of Vietnam is a part of the University’s mission.
Sessions presented during the Institute will cover topics including Asian literature, popular culture, Vietnamese politics and the military history of the Vietnam War. More than a dozen members of the Troy University faculty will lead sessions and present lectures. A featured presenter will be Dr. Zung Vu Tran, son of a former ambassador to the United States from the former South Vietnam. Troy University alumnus Dr. Quan Manh Ha, a member of the University of Montana faculty, will deliver closing remarks.
