Troy University’s Concert Chorale kicks off holidays with ‘Tidings of Joy’

TROY – Troy University’s Concert Chorale will ring in the holiday season with a free concert on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

“Tidings of Joy” will be performed at Park United Methodist Church in Troy.

“This fall concert consists of a program of traditional and newly composed Advent and Christmas choral music,” said Dr. Diane Orlofsky, a professor of Music in the John M. Long School of Music who is Director of University Choirs

“These pieces include a few of the masterworks of holiday choral literature, including the Christmas Oratorio of Camille Saint-Saëns and the Fantasia on Christmas Carols by Ralph Vaughn Williams,” she said.

AuburnArt announces "Legends, Traditions, Memories" contest

AuburnArt is collecting entries from members of the Auburn Family to compile a unique history of the legends, traditions, and memories of Auburn and to find out more about the ways Auburn fans value their connections to Auburn.  To encourage Auburn fans to enter the "Legends, Traditions, Memories" contest, AuburnArt created a video featuring several Auburn Legends and alumni who share their own stories about Auburn.  The video can be accesses at www.auburnart.com with additional videos added weekly featuring the legends, traditions, and memories of Auburn.

"Without its people's stories and memories, Auburn would just be a place," said Cliff L. Hare, great-grandson of Auburn legend Cliff Hare and owner of AuburnArt.  "But it's not just a place. It's a history, a relationship.

Troy University’s Campus Band to present fall concert Nov. 14

TROY -- The Troy University Campus Band will present its fall concert on Monday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Claudia Crosby Theater on the Troy Campus.

 

The band, consisting of 100 student members from all majors, will perform selections by American composers, including Troy University’s own Robert W. Smith.

 

The concert will feature the “Iliad” written by Smith from his original symphony “Odyssey.” Smith, a TROY graduate, is coordinator of the University’s music industry program in the John M. Long School of Music, and has published more than 600 compositions.

Troy University to honor Alumni of the Year at Homecoming on November 12th

Troy University to honor Alumni of the Year at Homecoming on November 12th

Troy University will honor four alumni with Alumni of the Year awards at halftime of the University’s homecoming game on Nov. 12 against North Texas. Kickoff for the game has been moved to noon to accommodate television broadcast.

Don Gaetz of Niceville, Fla., Charles Jinright of Montgomery, Claudene Bowdoin Nichols of Daphne and Brett Wilson of New Canaan, Conn., will be honored with Alumni of the Year awards. In addition to the presentation at halftime, the honorees will be recognized at an invitation-only dinner on Nov. 11 and an invitation-only breakfast reception in Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall on Nov. 12.

The awards are presented annually by the University as a part of its Homecoming celebration.

Troy University to host reading by author Alex Vernon

Author Alex Vernon, an award-winning military writer, will read from his works during an appearance at Troy University on Monday, Nov. 14.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. inside the Rosa Parks Museum auditorium at the Montgomery Campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Vernon is the author of a number of books and essays, including two military memoirs, “most succinctly bred” and “The Eyes of Orion: Five Tank Lieutenants in the Persian Gulf War,” winner of the Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Book Award. He is also the author of several scholarly works on war literature, most recently “Hemingway's Second War: Bearing Witness to the Spanish Civil War,” and a cultural study, “On Tarzan.”

Annual festival to kick off International Education Week at Troy University

TROY – The International Student Cultural Organization (ISCO) festival will highlight a week of activities aimed at promoting internationalization at Troy University.

 

The ISCO Festival, which features international cuisine and entertainment by TROY students, is set for 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.

 

The festival will kick off the University’s Observance of International Education Week, a nationwide event set for Nov. 14-18 that is designed to showcase the benefits of international exchange and cultural diversity. Troy University serves more than 800 international students.

 

“The festival is the most diverse and most exotic dinner theater offered in or around Troy,” said Pete Vroom, ISCO’s faculty advisor. “We take you all around the world without leaving your dinner table through a variety of international foods and performances.”
