Troy signs Lee-Scott Academy golfer to scholarship

Troy University head golf coach Matt Terry announced today the signing of Will Clowdus for the 2011-12 season. Clowdus is the fourth signee for the men's program.

A product of Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn, Clowdus helped his team to four state AISA championships and two runner-up finishes during his prep career.

Individually, Clowdus posted a pair of top 10 finishes in the Southeast Junior Golf Tour including low medalist honors for the SJGT Match Play in 2010. He played on the 2010 SJGT Nike Cup team and finished with a 5-0-1 record in six matches.

He finished third in the 2010 Indian Pines Invitational tournament.

In addition to his play on the golf course, Clowdus was a member of the Lee-Scott basketball team, which finished as the state runner-up during his senior season.

Away from athletics, Clowdus is a finalist for the I.J.

2011 “Catch A Smile” Bass Fishing Tournament and “Bream Buster”

 

Outdoors Without Limits (OWL) and the Campbell Plantation are teaming up again to present the 2nd Annual “Catch A Smile” Bass Fishing Tournament and “Bream Buster” May 20th.-21st..

 

The “Catch A Smile” Bass Tournament will start out with a bang, beginning at 6:00 AM Friday May 20th and on Saturday May 21st. ending with a weigh-in at 11:30 each day. OWL National spokesman Hank Parker will be handling the weigh inn’s and will be the guest speaker at the Friday night “Welcome Party” May 20th.. The professional anglers that will be participating in the tournament are Greg Hackney, Aaron Martens, Shaw Grigsby, Pam Martin Wells, David Kilgore, Greg Vinson, Jim Hardy, Keith Poche, Russ Lane, Eric Netherly and more. The “Welcome Party” will be held at the Cattleman’s Association Building in Troy, Al. with the doors opening at 6:00. Tickets are $20.00 and will be available at the door. Last year’s winning pro Greg Hackney said “This is probably the best tournament and event I have attended.”

Troy Alumni Association launches Each 1 Reach 1 campaign

TROY -- The Troy University Alumni Association is enlisting the help of current

members during May to build the organization’s membership.

 

The Alumni Association has launched a membership campaign under the theme

of “Each 1 Reach 1,” which encourages current members of both the alumni

organization and TROY Athletics’ Trojan Warrior program to recruit new

members. For each new member recruited to either organization through June

10, the current member responsible and the new member both have their names

put into a drawing for a football weekend package when the Trojans travel to

play Clemson during the 2011 season. The package includes two tickets to the

football game, a two-night stay in a hotel and a tailgating package that includes

TROY car flags, magnets and other Trojan gear.

MONTGOMERY, AL – Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $5,000 Toolbox for Education grant to a number of schools in the WSFA 12 News viewing area for an outdoor classroom as well as gardening and landscaping in their courtyards.

Sister Schubert's Rolls roll into Tuscaloosa

"Roll Tide Roll" took on a new meaning Monday after it was announced more than $500,000 worth of Sister Schubert's® Sausage Wrap Rolls are making their way to the West Alabama Food Bank as part of the tornado relief effort.

$500K worth of rolls works out to about 100,000 packages of the pre-baked, sausage-filled rolls. The doughy delights will be transported to Tuscaloosa in 4 waves over the next two months.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating storm that hit very close to home for our Alabama employees and their families," said Patricia "Sister Schubert" Barnes, Founder. "We hope this donation will provide food for those still in need."

Sister Schubert's Homemade Rolls was founded in Troy, Ala. by Barnes in 1991 and was eventually purchased by the T. Marzetti Company of Ohio.

Ala. poultry industry hit hard by tornadoes

The tornadoes not only killed hundreds of people and destroyed thousands of people's lives; it also caused major damage to the state's poultry industry.  Hundreds of chicken houses were destroyed, killing millions of birds.  

"When these houses get blown away, there's several thousand birds per house, you're trying to catch those birds up who didn't get killed," said Ray Hilburn, membership director for the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association.  "And clean that up and if there's any birds injured, trying to euthanize them properly."

Hilburn and other association members spent time in North Alabama assessing the damage and helping growers and companies recover. 

Two co-defendants plead guilty in federal court to 2009 Troy home invasion

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Two men from Clayton pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from a a home invasion in Troy that took place in October 2009 in which victims were beaten with pistols and sexaully assaulted.

Anthony Perrie Turner, 24, and Kendrick Katrell Thoma, 25,s admitted that they along with Thomas' older brother Ronald Demarkus Thomas, 26, forced their way into a residence occupied by six people. They demanded money and car keys at gunpoint. Several victims were beaten and pistol-whipped and two women inside the residence were sexually assaulted. The three assailants then fled in the victims' car.

It is a federal crime to take a vehicle from another person by force, violence and intimidation with the intent to cause death or serious bodily harm. Federal law also prohibits the use of a firearm during and in futherance of a carjacking. The crime is punishable by up to life in prison.
