Farrar's relief work leads Warhawks to victory in series final

The No. 18 Auburn Montgomery baseball team scored 14 times, but it was sophomore Daniel Farrar’s 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief that kept the team in the game, as the Warhawks picked up a 14-8 victory over Mobile in the series finale of the three-game series between the two squads.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 19-14 on the season and 6-9 in league play. The Rams fell to 21-10 overall and 9-6 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

“Today our guys showed that they could be a winner if they really wanted to,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “Their battles at the plate were much better and Farrar did a great job of coming in and stopping the bleeding. His efforts really gave us a chance to win the ball game.”

Farrar threw 107 pitches to complete the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one unearned run, while striking out eight.

“I knew I needed to come in with a lot of intensity and throw a lot of strikes,” Farrar said.

It took me a while to recognize in my Christian walk that I was a soldier on the battlefield for Christ. For many years, all I could think about was being in the military. Little did I know that I had already been chosen, predestined before I was yet formed in the womb, to fight on the battlefield for the Lord.

Tiara L. Hawthorne has endured the rigorous training required to become a member of the best military in the world. She has done the pushups, the running, and the sweating. She has heard the bark of a drill instructor's commands.

NEW ORLEANS – Troy junior Shane McCain was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for his work against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

McCain, a native of Fort Pierce, Fla., held Southeastern Louisiana to just three hits and one run over seven innings of work. The southpaw struck out a career-high nine batters in the game and did not issue a walk. McCain needed just 90 pitches to pick up his third victory and second quality start of the season.

McCain and reliever Matthew Howard combined to retire the final 16 Southeastern Louisiana batters in the game. McCain struck out multiple Lion batters in each of the first three innings and in four total frames; SLU came into the game with a top 10 RPI.

This is the first Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honor for a Trojan this year after Danny Collins was twice named the Sun Belt Player of the Week.

Walk Hard 2013 joins Travel Channel in spring break documentary

Troy University’s chapter of Alpha Tau Omega will be featured in a segment of the Travel Channel’s documentary “Spring Break 24/7.”

The program highlights the spring break travels of college students, who video document their break preparations and exploits. For more than a dozen brothers of ATO, this year’s break will be about raising funds for Special Olympics in Alabama and Florida, in addition to the original charity.

Walk Hard 2013 will begin on the Quad on March 8, and finish six days later and 140 miles to the south at Panama City Beach’s Pier Park. The fraternity is soliciting corporate and individual donors for the philanthropy. The effort began in 2010 when students Kyle Crabtree and Austin Bivins saw a man dressed as Superman walking down U.S. Highway 231 carrying an American flag. Curiosity sparked, they set out to organize a hike from Troy to the beach and began recruiting more participants.
