Troy University Sports and Fitness Management students gain Super Bowl experience

While there may not be any Troy University Trojans on the field in this year’s Super Bowl, several Sport and Fitness Management students will participate in activities surrounding the event.

Seventeen members of the University’s Sport Management Club will be volunteering in New Orleans Jan. 31 – Feb. 4, working two major events and participating in community service projects, said Dr. Michael Martinez, an assistant professor of Kinesiology and Health Promotion.

“One of the foundations of our Sport and Fitness Management program is to prepare our students for success in their future careers with practical, service learning experiences,” said Dr. Martinez. “This trip to the Super Bowl is one such opportunity where our students can take part in the overall experience.

Former ambassador, Middle East policy expert to lecture at Troy University

Dr. David Dunford, former U.S. Ambassador to Oman and an expert in Middle East policy, will visit Troy University this week as a part of the University’s Ambassador-in-Residence program.

Dr. Dunford is the fifth Ambassador-in-Residence fellow hosted by the University’s Department of Political Science through the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows program. The program, which is administered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, DC, brings prominent artists, diplomats, journalists, business leaders, and other professionals to campuses across the United States for a week-long residential program of classes, seminars, workshops, lectures, and informal discussions. TROY’s Ambassador-in-Residence program is supported by the Wallace D. Malone Fund.

Dr. Dunford’s intensive five-day visit will begins today and includes meetings and lectures on the Troy, Montgomery and Dothan campuses.

Renowned speaker will highight the 2013 Leadership Conference

Three renowned keynote speakers will highlight the Leadership Conference Celebrating Black History Month at Troy University Feb. 1-2.

Hosted by the University and City of Troy, the annual conference provides information to enhance the quality of leadership and civic participation of community leaders, area residents and university students.

“We are excited about the prospects offered by the 12th annual conference,” said conference chair Wanda H. Moultry. “It is a wonderful opportunity for participants to focus their thoughts on making a difference in their own community, and for student participants to hear role models challenge them to become leaders in their own communities.”

Providing the conference’s opening address at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1 will be Philadelphia native Dr. Marc Lamont Hill. Dr. Hill is a commentator for media outlets National Public Radio, The Washington Post, Essence Magazine, the New York Times, CNN, MSNBC and Fox News Channel.

Man convicted in Troy Mobile Home Park rapes

Man convicted in Troy Mobile Home Park rapes

TROY, AL (WSFA) - A man has been found guilty for two rapes that set a Troy Mobile Home community on edge in March 2012.

Andre Lamon Ellis was arrested on April 25, 2012 after a manhunt ensued for the person responsible for two rapes and an armed robbery in the Hunter's Mountain Mobile Home Park.

Police released a sketch shortly after the first rape was reported that led to the discovery of a second victim, and ultimately, Ellis' capture.

A Pike County Jury found Ellis guilty today on two counts of rape first degree and one count of burglary second degree.

The Pike County District Attorney's Office says it will be seeking a sentence of life without parole for the rape charges and life in prison for the burglary charge.

Three wiregrass residents sentenced for carjacking and kidnapping of three young children

Montgomery, Alabama – Joshua Roland Fuller Gilley, 26, of Enterprise, Alabama, and Westly Robert Rogers, 25, of Ozark, Alabama, and Melissa Lynn Mione McGee, 37, of Daleville, Alabama have all been sentenced after pleading guilty to carjacking an Isuzu Rodeo in which three children, ages, 2 ½ years, 1 ½ years, and 2 months old were riding in the backseat; and to kidnapping those same three young children, announced U.S. Attorney, George L. Beck, Jr.. 

Gilley was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller to 46 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to carjacking.  Rogers was sentence by Judge Fuller to 32 months imprisonment after pleading to carjacking and McGee was sentence by the same judge to 210 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to kidnapping. 

National Book Award Winner Nikky Finney to speak at Rosa Parks Museum

National Book Award Winner Nikky Finney to speak at Rosa Parks Museum

Nationally renowned poet Nikky Finney will read and discuss her work during an appearance at Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Winner of the National Book Award for poetry in 2011 for her fourth book of poetry, “Head Off & Split,” Finney will read and discuss selections from that work, including “Red Velvet,” her poem about Rosa Parks.

The event starts at 6 p.m. inside the museum auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

In addition to her reading, Finney will lead a workshop for high school creative writing students from 1-3 p.m. at Booker T. Washington Magnet High in Montgomery, also on Feb. 5.

Finney will also present a reading of “Red Velvet” on Monday, Feb. 4, during the museum’s celebration of Rosa Parks’ 100th Birthday. The event will be held at 6 p.m. inside the Gold Room in Whitley Hall on the Troy University Montgomery Campus.
