Detter named Troy University Homecoming Representative

Kellie Detter of Dothan has been named the Dothan Campus Representative for the 2012 Troy University Homecoming celebration.
 
Detter, a senior English major, will represent the Dothan Campus during TROY’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, Nov. 17, including riding in the annual Homecoming parade in downtown Troy. She will be recognized along with other members of the Homecoming Court during the 2 p.m. pregame show at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
 
Detter serves as a Student Government Association senator and is a Trojan Ambassador. She is also vice president of the Creative Writing Club.
 
TROY’s Homecoming celebration will start with the parade in downtown Troy at 10 a.m. Kickoff for the football game versus Arkansas State will be at 2:30 p.m.

McReynolds named Troy University Homecoming Representative

Canessa McReynolds of Montgomery has been named the Montgomery Campus Representative for the 2012 Troy University Homecoming celebration.
 
McReynolds, a sophomore marketing major, will represent the Montgomery Campus during TROY’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, Nov. 17, including riding in the annual Homecoming parade in downtown Troy. She will be recognized along with other members of the Homecoming Court during the 2 p.m. pregame show at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
 
McReynolds is a graduate of Jefferson Davis High School. She is a member of the Gamma Beta Phi National Honor Society and the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society, and is an active member of First Congregational Christian Church

Alabama EMA deploys team to assist with Superstorm Sandy response


Governor Robert Bentley on Monday announced that a team from the Alabama Emergency Management Agency is now in New York assisting with the ongoing recovery from Superstorm Sandy.

The nine-person Incident Management Team is beginning a 14-day mission supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  Team members were sent because of their experience in disaster response, including hurricane-specific recovery operations.  The team also has experience with the National Incident Management System.

“The Alabama Emergency Management Agency has the skills and experience needed to help communities recover,” Governor Bentley said.  “The team that is now in New York will make a tremendous and lasting impact.  Their work will be a benefit to everyone involved in the long-term recovery.  Alabama stands ready to help other states in any way we can.”

TROY PD:Wheeler to be returned to Troy next week

Suroy Manquel Wheeler, 34-years-old, will be picked up November 12th to be returned to Troy by a prisoner transport company from the Ventura County jail in California in connection with the death of a Troy woman according to information released by Chief Jimmy Ennis.

 Wheeler will be returned to Troy to face the murder charges against him in this case.  His bond has been set at $100,000.00.

He has been charged in the Saturday October 27th murder of Melissa Shipman.  Her body was found in her apartment that same day.

Troy murder suspect waives extradition from California

Suroy Manquel Wheeler waived extradition in Oxnard, CA in connection with the death of Melissa Shipman of Troy according to information released by Chief Jimmy Ennis Friday.

 Wheeler will be returned to Troy to face the murder charges against him in this case.  He is expected to be back in Troy within the next two weeks.  TPD will contract with a prisoner transport company to return Wheeler to Troy.

He has been charged in the Saturday October 27th murder of Shipman.  Her body was found in her apartment that same day.

Chief Ennis received information last week that Wheeler was possibly in California.  Wheeler was reported to be at the Norwalk bus terminal in Los Angeles.  He was trying to get to Oxnard, CA.

AISA names State Oratorical Contest winners

The Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) held its annual State Oratorical
Contest on October 30, 2012, at Faulkner University, Montgomery, Alabama. District
winners from the seven AISA districts competed for first, second, and third place awards.
All speakers addressed the topic, "Gun Control and the 2nd Amendment: What should
the government’s role be in balancing the safely of our nation’s citizens while
preserving the rights afforded to us through the United States Constitution?"
in prepared speeches that ranged from six to eight minutes in length.

STATE ORATORICAL WINNERS:

First Place: Riggs Taylor, Patrician Academy
Second Place: Eric Lowe, Crcnshaw Christian Academy
Third Place: Ashlyn Lett, Victory Christian School
