Nobles the hero for second straight game as AUM downs Cumberland

The Auburn Montgomery baseball team scored all five of its runs in the final two innings, capped by the second game-winning hit in as many days by freshman Shelby Nobles, as the Warhawks defeated Cumberland 5-4 Monday at the AUM Baseball Complex.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 9-5 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 5-3-1 overall.

AUM trailed 4-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, but rallied to tie the score at four each on two-run singles by senior Chad Mansmann and junior Josh Thompson. The hit capped a 3-for-3 day for Mansmann, who added two stolen bases in the victory.

Nobles collected the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning by beating out an infield single to shortstop. Senior Shane Turner led off the inning by working a walk, before junior Hayden Hillyer sacrificed him to second. Sophomore Bryan Young followed with a single to right field, loading the bases.

Freshman Shelby Nobles drove in a pair of runs, including the game-winning run with two outs in the eighth inning, to lead the Auburn Montgomery baseball team past Cumberland 4-2 Sunday at the AUM Baseball Complex.

Nobles also recorded a RBI on a sacrifice fly to put the Warhawks (8-5) on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Patrick Devault kept the Bulldogs (5-2-1) in check offensively by tossing eight, four-hit innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.

“I was very impressed with what Patrick gave us on the mound today,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “I was also very pleased to see Shelby, who is just a freshman, drive in two big runs for us. I think the kids are starting loosen up a little bit and swing the bat a lot better. This was a big win for us.”

AUM was led at the plate by senior Branden Kelley, who finished 3-for-3 with a run scored.

In its first Southern States Athletic Conference series of the season, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team was able to take two out of three after earning a split with Loyola in a doubleheader this afternoon.

Chad Mansmann and Shane Turner each drove in four runs in game one, as the Warhawks scored their most runs in two years in a 17-9 victory. AUM then dropped an 8-7 heartbreaker in game two. Loyola scored five runs in the ninth inning to take an 8-4 lead. AUM rallied with three in the bottom of the inning, but stranded runners on second and third to end the game

The Warhawks are now 7-5 (2-1 SSAC) on the season, while the Wolfpack moved to 5-11 (1-2).

“Our offense really stepped up for us today,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “We had some really good at-bats, and we kept it going in the second game as well. Our defense and pitching kind of fell apart late, but I thought the guys battled really well at the end.

Most state public fishing lakes now open

February 1 marked the return of fishing season at 20 of Alabama’s 23 State Public Fishing Lakes. Commonly known as state lakes or county lakes, these waters are noted for their amenities and their quality fishing for bream, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie (in some lakes). Because these smaller lakes warm more quickly than larger reservoirs, early spring fishing can be excellent. Anglers may fish from the pier, bank, rental boat or personal boat.

“State public fishing lakes are the ultimate family fishing destination,” said Jack Turner, State Lakes Supervisor for the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF). “All lakes except Pike County Lake have a concession building with snacks, drinks, restrooms and personnel who provide fishing advice. The concessionaires have mowed areas along the shoreline for fishing.
