No. 18 AUM earns 2-1 victory against Shawnee State

No. 18 AUM earns 2-1 victory against Shawnee State

Daniel Farrar tossed six effective innings and Chad Mansmann drove in the go-ahead run to lead the Auburn Montgomery baseball team past Shawnee State 2-1 Sunday.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 5-4 on the season, while the Bears fell to 2-5 overall.

“They say any win is a good win, but we are starting to get discouraged offensively,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “We have to get things right. Pretty soon our pitching is going to collapse if we can’t score a few runs for them. I am very pleased with the way our pitchers have responded the last few ball games. At the end of the day, I am proud of the team for gutting out a win, but we have to get better.”

On the afternoon, AUM recorded just three hits, one each by Mansmann, Branden Kelley and Josh Thompson.

Mansmann delivered the key hit of the game, a run-scoring double in the third inning, which scored Wes Hughes. Hughes led off the frame by working a walk and later stole second.

No. 18 Warhawks sweep doubleheader at Blue Mountain

No. 18 Warhawks sweep doubleheader at Blue Mountain

The No. 18 Auburn Montgomery baseball team swept its non-conference doubleheader at Blue Mountain College on Tuesday, taking the opening 7-1 and the nightcap 8-1.

In the opener, junior Blake Bearden and sophomore Bryan Young each drove in a pair of runs and senior Will Ruffin tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings to lift the Warhawks (3-3) to the victory.

AUM scored three runs in both the first and second innings, while adding a single run in the fourth. The Toppers (3-4) were able to avoid the shutout with an unearned run in sixth inning.

Ruffin (1-0) struck out a season-best six hitters in the outing, scattering just three hits in the contest. Fellow senior Blake Woo worked around three walks to close out the sixth inning, while junior Nathan Taylor tossed a scoreless seventh.

Bearden finished with two of the Warhawks’ seven hits, including a double. Senior Shane Turner, as well as juniors David Carter and Josh Thompson, also collected RBIs.

Warhawks split doubleheader with No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan

Warhawks split doubleheader with No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan

Behind a three-run homer by junior David Carter and a two-run single by senior Chad Mansmann, the Auburn Montgomery baseball team managed a split in its doubleheader against the defending NAIA national champions Tennessee Wesleyan on Sunday. The Warhawks took the opener 5-4, before falling in game two 12-3.

With the split, AUM improved to 1-3 on the season, while the Bulldogs are also now 1-3. Tennessee Wesleyan entered the game as the preseason No. 1 team in the NAIA, while the Warhawks are ranked No. 18.

“In the opener, we really swung the bat well in critical situations,” head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “In game two, we fell apart. We didn’t get the kind of pitching in the middle of the game that we needed, but we did have some positive things. Erik Lawrence changed his whole delivery and came in and shut them out for three innings, throwing nothing but strikes. David Carter found out something about his swing and really swung the bat well.

No. 18 Warhawks drop doubleheader to No. 12 Lindsey Wilson

No. 18 Warhawks drop doubleheader to No. 12 Lindsey Wilson

The No. 18 Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped both games of its season-opening doubleheader to No. 12 Lindsey Wilson on Saturday, falling 11-6 in game one and 4-2 in game two.

The Warhawks (0-2) struggled offensively, putting together just nine hits in the twin bill. AUM also left 16 combined runners on base in the doubleheader.

“I think we have a lot of growing up to do,” 27th-year head coach Q.V. Lowe said. “We are a young team, but our approaches at the plate were not very good. We had some pitchers give up a lot of free passes, either by walks or hit by pitch, the next thing you know, we throw a ball away and them we are in trouble. We have to get tougher as a ball club.”

Senior Shane Turner connected on three of those hits, finishing the opener 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Fellow senior Chad Mansmann had two hits and a pair of runs scored. In game two, junior Brett Wellman finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in.

AUM athletics give back to community for MLK Day

AUM athletics give back to community for MLK Day

In conjunction with the university-wide Martin Luther King Day of Service initiative, several of the Auburn Montgomery athletic programs took part in a variety of community service projects across the area over the past week.

Representatives from baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, cheerleading, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s cross country all participated or have plans to participate in the initiative.

“It’s outstanding to see such widespread community engagement from our athletic programs,” Athletics Director Steve Crotz said. “Giving back to Montgomery is very important to AUM athletics, and there is no better time to emphasize this point than around a holiday celebrating a man who did so much, both for Montgomery and our nation as a whole.”

The AUM baseball team traveled up to Millbrook to assist the Alabama Wildlife Federation at a local pond.
